1. Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Assets: $655 billion
The perennial top of the heap of Canadian banks, the Royal Bank is the largest Canadian bank by deposits, revenues and market capitalization. It operates across Canada, the United States and 53 other countries serving more than 18 million clients and employing 77,000 worldwide. Its services include banking, wealth management, insurance and investment banking. Since the subprime mortgage crisis, RBC surpassed the U.S. giant Morgan Stanley in market valuation.

2. Toronto-Dominion Bank Assets: $557.2 billion
Created by the merger of Bank of Toronto and the Dominion Bank in 1955, TD operates as TD Bank Financial Group. TD Canada Trust is the Canadian personal and commercial bank while in the United States it goes by the name of TD Bank. It also has an insurance unit, stock brokerage and wealth management divisions called TD Waterhouse, TD Asset Management and TD AMERITRADE. It is now the sixth largest bank in North America based on its branch network.

3. Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) Assets: $496.5 billion
Founded in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1832, Scotiabank’s nominal headquarters remains in the Maritimes although its operations are based in Toronto. Dedicated to being the best Canadian-based international financial services institution, it provides personal, commercial, corporate and investment banking in 50 countries around the world. It ranks 92 on Forbes Global 2000 list.

4. Bank of Montreal (BMO) Assets: $388.5 billion
With its legal headquarters still in Montreal, the parent company has removed the word Montreal from all but its Canadian banking arm, operating as BMO Financial Group instead. In addition to its Canadian bank, it operates Harris Bank and BMO Harris in the United States, a wealth management group and BMO Capital Markets. It is Canada’s oldest bank and now lists more than 10 million customers internationally.

5. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Assets: $335.9 billion
Commonly known as CIBC, the bank was formed by the merger of the Canadian Bank of Commerce and the Imperial Bank of Canada. The Canadian Bank of Commerce brought a rich history into the merger, including being asked by the federal government to establish a branch in Dawson City during the gold rush. It established branches in the Caribbean in the 1920s and in 1936 became the first Canadian bank to establish a personal loans department. In the largest merger of two chartered banks in Canada at the time, the two banks joined in 1961. The CIBC now operates in Canada, United States, the Caribbean, Asia and the United Kingdom. Its investment arm was created by the takeover of Wood, Gundy & Company.

6. National Bank of Canada Assets: $132.1 billion
Established by Francophone businessmen dissatisfied with existing banks, the Banque Nationale was dedicated to supporting their interests. It began in Quebec City in 1860 and, through mergers with other banks, grew to be the first Canadian bank to launch a credit card. In the late 1970s it merged with another major Quebec bank to create the National Bank of Canada. While remaining predominantly a Quebec institution, it has operations across Canada and internationally. After deregulation, it expanded into securities, insurance and wealth management.

7. HSBC Bank Canada Assets: $71.3 billion
The only foreign subsidiary among the 10 biggest banks, HSBC Canada is an arm of the London-based financial services giant. The parent company, which began in Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1865, is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services groups with approximately 8,000 offices on five continents. Its Canadian arm has its headquarters in Vancouver from where it oversees140 bank branches. It offers full personal and commercial banking as well as a brokerage firm, an asset management office and life and health insurance products.

8. Laurentian Bank of Canada Assets: $22.2 billion
Originally established to give the working class of Montreal a place to save, it accepted all deposits no matter how small. Although it did not open a branch outside the Montreal area until 1975, it is now the third largest branch network in Quebec and continues to focus on individuals and small to medium businesses. It has 157 branches, 32 commercial banking centres and 15 brokerage offices.

9. Vancity Saving Credit Union Assets: $14.5 billion
The only credit union among the top 10 financial institutions, it is made up of 400,000 members in British Columbia. Vancity offers regular banking, loans, credit card services and, through its subsidiaries, also provides insurance and investing services. 10. Canadian Western Bank Assets: $11.6 billion
